The Cyclone NewsRouter requires specific software and hardware. Before installing Cyclone, ensure your system meets or exceeds the following requirements:
Solaris 2.5 (or greater) for Sparc processors OR
Solaris 2.5 x86 (or greater) for Intel processors
64MB of RAM and 256MB of Virtual Memory. More is recommended for large sites.
64MB hard disk space for the Cyclone software and history database.
1GB of hard disk space (or more) depending on the quality of service you provide to your peers.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Choose a machine to run the system. Login as "root" and copy the Cyclone compressed "tar" file to that system.
As "root", create a user on the system called "news" using the UNIX
useradd(1M) command.
Become the "news" user and unpack the compressed Cyclone "tar"
file into a local directory on your machine using the UNIX
zcat(1) and tar(1) programs.
The system is now installed and ready for initial configuration. Read the Configuration Guide for assistance.
Install ALL vendor recommended patches! Recent vendor supplied fixes can greatly increase the performance and reliability of TCP/IP applications (like Cyclone). For Solaris: ftp://sunsolve1.sun.com/pub/patches/patches.html
Multiple Disk Drives. To achieve maximum performance, we strongly recommend installing Cyclone on a machine with multiple disk drives. It is easy to configure Cyclone to evenly spread system load across whatever disk hardware you have available.
